Amrum - The island
The beach is soft, white, and wide like a fine silk scarf. The view from the North Sea island Amrum to the Norddorf beach is spectacular and breathtaking. One of the largest beaches in Europe – 15 kilometers long and almost two kilometers wide. And on such a small island. The spectacular beach is called Kniepsand and has room not only for vacationers to swim, dig in the sand, and take walks, but is also a huge nature reserve with a unique dune landscape. And the best part of it is that the Kniepsand gets bigger from year to year thanks to the offshore sand banks. You can actually forget your car, because the island is small enough to get around everywhere by bicycle or the well-developed bus network. Cyclists and hikers find lovely routes through the idyllic villages. In many places on Amrum you can see off into the distance, but the best view is from the Amrum lighthouse. But you have to work before you can enjoy the view, because first you have to climb the 300 steps to the top, which is 64 meters high. But it’s worth it! An endless view across the islands and halligs. The picturesque village of Nebel is also quite a sight. Here are most of the thatched-roof houses with beautiful farmers’ gardens, and here you can feel the Frisian roots and the historic past of the old seafarers. At the cemetery are splendid captain’s gravestones, with ornate inscriptions of the dramatic life stories. For example Hark Olufs, who was kidnapped as a 15-year-old boy and sold into slavery, only to return as a rich man twelve years later. Amrum is the somewhat different vacation site, far from the commotion and yet with plenty of entertainment. A good place for those who enjoy life, for families, and for nature enthusiasts.
