Büsum – The town
“Once upon a time there was a small island. Rough waters came, and clouds of sand. Men fought the waves and made walls of meadows. Over thousands of years, Büsum was created.” The story of how the North Sea spa was born sounds like a fairy tale.
It is a success story – today Büsum is the third largest vacation site on the North Sea coast of Schleswig-Holstein and is synonymous with vacation for everyone. Families with children are just as welcome as nature lovers, senior citizens, sports enthusiasts, or hikers – everyone looking for relaxation far away from the daily routine. And that is because clever natives discovered and promoted the tourism potential of the area more than 100 years ago. Stroll in the nautical atmosphere, ride bikes in front of the backdrop of the World Natural Heritage site, the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park, where science is presented for children but fascinating for adults as well, there is a huge selection of sports, and of course, the delicious Büsum shrimp.
And your mind is also cared for at wellness in the health and thalasso center “Vitamaris” and there is a lot of fresh air. One fascinating attraction is the storm surge world “Blanker Hans”. Generations of coastal inhabitants had a great deal of respect for this huge phenomenon that devoured land and people. Visitors can experience how destructive a “Blanker Hans” can be in a simulated time travel. The Büsum vacation organizers are inventive and humorous in their work. It shows in some of the more exotic offers – get married on a shrimp boat? No problem. Young couples can get married on the “Hauke”. And a hike through the mudflats at night by torchlight and music, led by the “Watt president” is not something you experience every day. But it’s been offered here for over 100 years – ¬ clever folks, these Büsumers.
