Eiderstedt - The region
Almost everyone is familiar with the lighthouse of Westerhever, at least from TV advertising. But very few know where it is – it is the symbol of the peninsula of Eiderstedt.
Striking buildings and an endless green world mark this region on the North Sea. Eighteen historic churches and about 70 of the originally 400 impressive farmhouses (haubargs) rise from the flat landscape. In the 15th to 17th century, the Dutch brought this architecture to the coast and the buildings are now protected monuments. The best known is the “Rote Haubarg” in Witzwort, which now is home to a restaurant.
If you are looking for a quiet spot to enjoy the beauty of nature, Eiderstedt is ideal. A well-marked network of bicycle trails facilitates biking tours from village to village. There are eight cultural historical theme routes on Eiderstedt. The beautiful scenery of the nature reserve attracts many hikers also. The clocks on Eiderstedt run at a slower pace and you quickly forget the hectic pace of your daily routine. Nature alone sets the rhythm. The endless sky stretches above the lush green polders, the sheep graze lazily, huge flocks of birds rest on their way south. There is vibrant life in the three main towns on the peninsula: Tönning, St. Peter-Ording, and Garding. Vacationers can find attractive events here.
Couples have many options for getting married on Eiderstedt. How about exchanging rings at the lighthouse of Westerhever? Or maybe within the historical walls of the historical museum in St. Peter-Ording? Or in the czar room of the city hall in Tönning, on the deck of a ship,or beneath the heavy beam ceiling of the imposing “Rote Haubarg”? Splendid ways to combine vacation and honeymoon.
