Diamonds of the region's "joie de vivre" can be found everywhere here. One almost doesn't have to say anything more about Sylt – but that'd be a pity. Nowhere else in Germany can so much culinary art, culture, shopping, elegance, "savoir vivre", style, wellness and homeliness be found in such a small area. Sylt even farms its own oysters, which is unique in Germany. The density of Michelin-starred chefs is unbelievable in proportion to the island's small size.
But you can eat well everywhere on the North Sea coast, not just on Sylt. For example, you can find excellent quality food in the restaurants and events that are part of the "Feinheimisch" festival. The region's Gourmet Festival lives up to its name and lasts from October to March.
Culture fans meanwhile can go on the trail of famous artists and writers. Husum dedicates some festivals, readings and tours to its most famous son, Theodor Storm, for instance.
Music lovers come specially to North Germany to enjoy the concerts that make up the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival, which features amazing artists from all over the world.
The island of Föhr has a new attraction for art collectors and admirers: "Kunst an der Westküste" (West Coast Art) is the name of the new museum, whose stated aim is to research and display art that deals with the themes of sea and coastline. The starting point is the collection of paintings from museum donor Professor h.c Frederik Paulsen. The collection currently includes around 500 paintings and graphic works, including some by artists like Anna Ancher, Emil Nolde, Max Beckmann and a great many more.
Emil Nolde has his own dedicated house in the region. The Nolde Foundation is located in Seebüll and includes the garden that inspired many of Nolde's marvellous flower paintings.
Holidaymakers of a sporty nature can challenge themselves on any of the twelve golf courses in the region or in the attractive sailing spots.
The region is also a heaven for those seeking wellness, beauty or thalasso treatments.
