Experience nature at the North Sea – unique natural spectacle
Nature in all of its variety and uniqueness – this is the North Sea coast in Schleswig-Holstein. A paradise that needs to be protected. Life in harmony with nature and the rhythm of the tides. Humans and animals live side by side and enjoy nature’s gifts. The UNESCO included the Schleswig-Holstein Wadden Sea in the list of world natural heritage sites, special regions worthy of protection. Visitors find many unique forms of life and nature here:
The Wadden Sea National Park
Humans have been fascinated by the ebb and flow of the tides for millennia. The moon creates the rhythm. The water leaves, yet so much life remains. Millions of tiny species, micro-organisms, clams, lugworms, crabs, and many more thrive in this living earth. The water washes up even more treasures: this is the habitat for fish, jellyfish, starfish and clams, seals, and many others. Knowledge is an adventure. Children love it and adults are infected by their enthusiasm. Get out the buckets, nets, shovels, and you’re ready for the adventurous search. Trained guides or national park rangers contribute their vast experience to fascinating excursions and ensure your safety. It can also be dangerous far out in the mudflats.
Houses on hills
The halligs are unique in the world and are especially protected as a part of the national park. These small flat islands were built up over centuries from the fertile silt soil or remained from larger land areas after the flooding during the Middle Ages. They have no dikes and are regularly flooded during the fall and winter storms. To protect them from flooding, the houses are built on what are called warfts, mounds of earth. They are unique in the world.
Nature discovery areas
A beautiful marsh landscape with lovely rivers, endless dikes, green woods – these are also facets of the unique nature of the North Sea.
Numerous nature discovery areas along the North Sea in Schleswig-Holstein make it possible for visitors to enjoy nature and gain knowledge at the same time. Fascinating and accessible to children. Learning can be fun. Why is it necessary to protect nature? Why do species and entire regions need to be saved from extinction? The nature info centers give us the answers. But just seeing the beauty of it all is sometimes answer enough. The lakes and idyllic river landscapes invite you to hike, swim, or row through them. For example, the Eider-Treene-Sorge region. It offers a great opportunity for canoers to explore the unique landscape from the water. The Eider, the longest river in Schleswig-Holstein, crosses the region. The Treene, an arm of the Eider left in its natural state, snakes through the marsh-moor landscape. The Sorge invites you to tour the forest-rimmed Geesttal before it makes its way through the meadow and lowland areas of the region on its way to the Treene.
Nature at the North Sea means enjoying the sound of silence and experiencing the power of the tides and the beauty of the open landscape. Vacation with all your senses for all your senses.
