Friedrichstadt - The town
The first glance tells you where Friedrichstadt has its roots: the canals, bridges, and stepped gables speak their own language, namely Dutch. The climatic health resort is relatively young – just 400 years old – and not typical at all for Schleswig-Holstein. “Little Amsterdam” or “Dutch Town” is usually mentioned in the same breath as Friedrichstadt.
Religiously persecuted Remonstrants from the Netherlands were given permission to settle in this idyllic site in Nordfriesland by Duke Friedrich the 3rd of Schleswig-Gottorf. The Dutch brought their language, their architecture, and their culture with them. Some of it has disappeared, but the easygoing Dutch joy of life and tolerance remained.
The water for the canals comes from the Eider and Treene rivers, which meet in Friedrichstadt and create a fertile, attractive nature reserve around it. You can discover the beauty of this area on long bike tours or canoeing trips.
Roses are another passion of the people in Friedrichstadt. Their beauty combined with the cobblestone streets and the white houses with stepped gables provide a romantic backdrop for tourists. One picture postcard motif after another. You can enjoy the beauty of the town and the lovely landscape surrounding it on foot, by bike, and of course by boat. In the “Alte Münze” museum or a tour of the town, visitors can experience a history lesson for the whole family and discover the colorful history of Friedrichstadt. Culture enthusiasts will love the many galleries and numerous events. Friedrichstadt loves a celebration. Roses have their own festival, and bikes are the stars on “Bicycle Day”. There are dragon boat races and the climax is the “Friedrichstädter Festtage” with a parade of decorated boats through all the canals and fireworks. There are plenty of things to see for a whole week, but Friedrichstadt is also good for a short vacation or day trip. In addition to many lovely hotels and holiday apartments there is also a youth hostel and camping ground.
