Hallig Gröde - The hallig
Gröde is known throughout Germany. As the smallest German voting district, it is traditionally the first one to finish counting and present its results. Only 17 residents live on two warfts, or earthen mounds. The term family connections takes on a whole new meaning on Hallig Gröde, for it is guaranteed when you spend your vacation in one of the five accommodations. The vacation package also includes a lush landscape and plenty of healthy air. Gröde-Appelland, its proper name, grew together from the two halligs Gröde and Appelland. And Hallig Habel is also part of mayor Volker Mommsen’s community, but Habel is uninhabited.
Two pupils currently attend the elementary school. And the physical and spiritual well-being of the inhabitants is also taken care of. A shopkeeper on the mainland deliveries by ship and the mailman also visits Gröde regularly. The pastor from Langeness comes for church services in the beautiful little hallig church. Up to 50 times a year – especially in the winter – it is “land under” when only the houses on the two warfts peek out of the water. For visitors from the mainland, it is an impressive sight. In summer, cows from the mainland also take a vacation on the hallig. They naturally also arrive by ship – just like the people looking for relaxation. And what do you do on such a small hallig? Fishing, hiking in the mudflat, looking for amber, swimming, or just relaxing.
