Helgoland - The island
“Somewhere in the green sea, God smiled and made a little spot with a brush – the island.” James Krüss, author of children’s books, wrote this in praise of his island. The man from Helgoland described the beauty of the North Sea island in many stories. Many traces of him can be found there, including his own museum.
Helgoland is a very special place. There is more to see here on only one square kilometer than in most any other place. And there are many curiosities. Helgoland’s shape, location, and history make it unique. It is an independent community and has no customs duty or sales tax. Of course, this is great for islanders and vacationers. The island is actually two islands. But the other island “Düne” often remains unmentioned. Its fine sandy beaches are great for swimming. And you are very near to seals and porpoises. Its symbol can be seen from afar. But the “Lange Anna”, as the red cliff is lovingly called, is worrying the islanders, because it is breaking apart.
You can reach the top by elevator or stairs – and from here admire the North Sea panorama and steep cliffs. Lobsters are especially well cared for on Helgoland. This was once a big area for lobsters. Then they almost disappeared, before the Biological Institute saved them from extinction by raising 100,000. You can even get married in a “lobster stand”.
Zanzibar or Helgoland was once the question: But fortunately, Kaiser Wilhelm II decided on the valiant little island in the North Sea, otherwise the People of Helgoland would be British citizens today. And that would just not be right, considering that Hoffmann von Fallersleben wrote our national anthem here. In addition to all these curiosities, you can also spend a wonderful vacation here.
