Nordstrand - The peninsula
Is it an island or not? That’s a tough question here. Nordstrand is connected to the mainland by a causeway and is thus technically a peninsula, but in their hearts, the inhabitants consider themselves islanders and their history is also that of an island. Either way, it is simply beautiful. It is called “the green heart of the Wattenmeer” and the title says something about its features. A lot of green meadows and dikes can be found here, surrounded by the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park. This mixture makes the air healthy and Nordstrand is also known as a “North Sea Health Resort”. Bicycling is a fine thing on this island. It’s the best way to really see the beauty of the unique world of the islands and halligs. “Immer auf’m Deich entlang” (just follow the dike) goes a song in Holstein, and that’s what you can do plenty of here. To the accompaniment of the soft baa’s of the woolly islanders. Many sheep and their tiny hooves ensure that the dikes are kept compact and the grass is short. Life just has to be pleasant in a place like this. The islanders are gracious hosts. Families with children, hikers, and nature enthusiasts find plenty of room here for a great vacation. The climate and the landscape are good for your soul as well. Many vacationers come for rest and relaxation.
