Hallig Oland - The hallig
One warft with everything on it – that’s Oland, the oldest hallig. Some 30 people live in 17 houses on this warft, and the entire hallig covers about 117 hectares. “No one here lives more than 100 meters from the cemetery,” goes an old saying and you can believe it without checking. You could say the same about the Frisian houses, the lovingly tended farmer’s gardens, the tiny school, the hallig restaurant “Kiek in”, the post office, and the thatched-roof lighthouse.
Oland is 5 kilometers from the mainland and for 80 years has been connected to Dagebüll by a stone causeway with a rail line. The railway goes via Oland through the Wattenmeer to Hallig Langeness, 2.5 kilometers away. It is used by open motor trams. Since you can reach Oland only by excursion ship – not by ferry – the private trams are an important means of transportation for the people of Oland. They are used not only for shopping and the mail, but some of the vacationers also use this means to reach the hallig. The others take the excursion ship MS Rungholt from Schlüttsiel. And this makes it clear that Oland has no cars.
There used to be a sailing tram, which made things difficult when the wind was unfavorable. The song of praise to “Kapitän Magda” is sung to this day on Oland. She was Magda Mathiesen, the captain of the sailing tram. Her grave is in the small cemetery on the hallig.
