Pellworm - The island
Pellworm is the greenest North Sea island, in both senses of the word. Many dikes with many sheep, many meadows and fields, and many inhabitants who actively pursue environmental protection. Pellworm was one of the first islands to use wind power. And now you can see the windmills rotating from afar. One of the largest solar and wind power stations in Europe is at the North Sea resort in Pellworm. The people of Pellworm, in one of the regions with the most sun and wind, have long discovered the advantages of renewable energy. The most important inhabitant of Pellworm is “Pelle”, the small woolly sheep that is the mascot and can be seen everywhere.
Pellworm is the third largest of the North Frisian islands. Some 1,000 native Pellwormers live on the seven-kilometer long, six-kilometer wide island. Another symbol of the island is the lighthouse with its red and white rings, which still houses Germany’s highest civil registry office. Many of the 50 farms still stand on warfts, or earthen mounds. Pellworm is for everyone and is famous for its hospitality. Families with children, nature enthusiasts, and senior citizens can relax and enjoy the diverse landscape.
For all of them, the stories of the legendary Rungholt – also known as the Frisian Atlantis – are fascinating. The wealthy town was once part of the former Strand island, from which Pellworm arose. A powerful storm surge took Rungholt and seven other towns into the depths of the sea. Traces of the settlements can still be found in the mudflats. Everyone on Pellworm takes up the search when the annual “Rungholt Days” bring up the memory of the drama.
