Tönning – The town
Tönning an der Eider once did a great business with cheese and a canal. Dutch immigrants – of course – brought cheese to the coast and promoted it. That was all a long time ago. During their history, the people of Tönning showed a great deal of creativity and skill. They again created something unique in Schleswig-Holstein, the Multimar-Wattforum, a perfect combination of nature reserve, information, and entertainment. The discovery exhibit, which shows the fascinating habitat in the Wattenmeer and surrounding areas, draws visitors from the whole country and is also the most important message of the Schleswig-Holstein Wattenmeer National Park.
Tönning offers a lot of variety for a vacation with children. And nature enthusiasts also find what they want.
The people of Tönning have more to offer: a cozy fishing and sports harbor, where the shrimp sandwiches are not the only great food.
The historic façades in the old town still reminds us of the Dutch. There are houses with stepped gables from the 17th and 18th century. From Tönning, you can explore Eiderstedt easily by bike.
Some of the imposing haubarg farmhouses on the peninsula are over 250 years old. The Katinger Watt is a diverse natural landscape and the Eider flood barrier amazes children and adults as well.
Uniqueness seems to be a recipe for success in Tönning. For example, they have the largest Advent calendar: In the historic Packhaus at the harbor, the warehouse is converted into a huge lighted Advent calendar in the Christmas season. And there is a Christmas market famous well beyond the borders. This alone makes it worth a visit.
